Why Americans Can’t Make Anime (Or Can They?)

This rant contains spoilers! This rant may cause cancer in rats as known by the State of California.

Now, before anyone asks, I’m not talking about: “Blah blah freaking blah, Americans can’t make anime because they’re not Japanese!” Nope, I’m talking about the fact everything we’re obsessed with is not the focus of anime. For example:

  • Friendly robotic sidekicks (such as the Tachikoma from GITS)
  • Artifical Intelligence that can both sing and pilot experimental aircraft (such as Sharon from Macross Plus)
  • Breasts (such as… well, almost any anime out there)
  • Unrealistically large weapons that can destroy the planet (Gundam 0083, Eureka Seven, SDF Macross, etc)
  • Messed up concepts from religion taken out of context (Evangelion, and to a lesser degree Eureka Seven)
  • ‘Real’ giant robots (Gundam, Macross, Evangelion, Eureka Seven)
  • Urban combat (Gundam, Macross, Evangelion, Eureka Seven)
  • Shit blowing up (again, almost any anime out there)

Almost every single one of those example animes listed next to each obsessed over thing, each one of them have yet another concept that runs along side that, that Americans totally miss out on:

  • The Tachikoma are weapons of war, and they kill people
  • Sharon fell in love with the main character of Macross Plus and tried to kill everyone over it
  • Breasts are also useful for flotation devices in emergencies!
  • Almost everyone dies because of their use
  • The religion in Evangelion was there to hide the physiological babble behind
  • Those ‘real’ giant robots are also weapons of war, and kill people
  • During urban combat, innocent people die
  • More often than not, someone has died during shit blowing up

There are few cartoons (since we Americans can’t call ours anime) that actually touch on these subjects. The ones that do are quickly shut away as some ‘evil, Satan worshiping creation to corrupt children’, and get a big fat TV-MA or Rated R sticker stuck on it.

I mean, some people say America is desensitized to violence; no, I think America is too afraid to face it and to deal with it. What would happen if we showed children that their favorite cartoon character died painfully because of war or some other battle? They’d never happily march off to war. They’d never pick up a gun and shoot someone over a trivial matter. They’d think twice before ending someone’s life.

In essence, America can’t make anime not because we’re not Japanese, but because we refuse to tell good stories. The one thing missing from most Amercian cartoons is plot and character development; they miss out the most important part of writing a story: you cannot keep your characters safe, bad things always have to happen to them.

AND MY NAME IS JULIUS BY THE WAY SHOWS HOW TRUSTING PEOPLE ARE THESE DAYS

JAPAN OWNS!!!

VOTE FOR KIRA!!

AMERICANS CANT MAKE ANIME BECAUSE THEY CANT DRAW THERES NOTHING TO DICUSS!!!

Anime came from Japan. Yes, that’s true. But a lot of non-japanese also contributed a lot to the development of anime. Remember, people around also watch anime and most of them aspire to become anime maker someday. So its sad news to them… =(

i 4 1 love anime and american cartoons and i really want to know if i have to go to japan to make it the only anime inspired shows i know of are boondocks and avatar but when i get the chance to animate id want more freedom to do whatever i want i mean im not entirely sure if i could animate a show in america with a girl with big boobs and a lot of gore u dont see many cartoons like that in anime style 🙁 but the thing about japan having a low budget is sorta upsetting cuz it limits there animation a bit witch explains the single picturs moving around for 20 seconds :/ and i love japanese music it would be nice to get a band to play an opening for my show ^^ and the coloring in anime compared to american seems different i guess cause japan shows have more detail but look at the show ( Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei ) the style and coloring looks great :I
i cant even speak japanese or write it witch is another obstacle
i also am not that good at drawing anime style but i really want to
most people would say ” stop trying to coppy someone elses style and be original ” but i feel i can be original nd still go anime style :I
im kinda stuck and unsure of what i should do :/

man thts alota typing 😛

I wonder why out of all the upcoming “Spring Anime” for 2010, there’s like… not one Fantasy title listed. It’s the damn best genre there is and it’s nowhere to be found. God that is lame. What is it with all these Ecchi Anime being constantly released, anyway?

I’d be curious to know your take on the new onslaught of 3d animated pieces coming out of Europe.

I haven’t seen many of them. They seem pretty hit and miss at times. Although, that seems to be true of America with all the Pixar clones floating around (Pixar’s films have all been great except for Cars, which was obviously botched due to Disney actually running Pixar for the first time).

It’s funny that “anime” is only for Japanese, while non-Japanese cannot publish anime… I really want to see the law that said anime is for Japanese artist only…

Non-Japanese also have “anime-art” talent.. It’s just the matter that there’s no place to publish them, other than Japan(I think).. I apologize if what I had comment offend other people…

I liked the post and your writing style. I’m adding you to my RSS reader.

There is nothing sadder than grown men fighting over cartoons.

Granted “anime” is classified as animation originating from Japan. So on a nerdy bookworm contest nobody born any ware else could create it. I however look at it from a different perspective, animated entertainment not centered around child or adolescent entertainment. Or as you might say in America “Adult Cartoons that aren’t Pornos.” I think anyone can create that.

As for American’s producing poor entertainment or “missing” the point in anime pieces I find that to be so far off the ball and frankly racist. To think that only people born and bred in Japan can understand the consequences of war, death, drama and any other of the serious human conditions that exist within our world is bigoted.

Hollywood, love or hate them, have produced some of the most riveting films on these issues ever. Take Philadelphia, a story about a gay man with aides combating the system that finds his very existence taboo. Full Metal Jacket, We Were Soldiers, Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now are perhaps the greatest war films of all time and defiantly define this canon. Mystic River is a staple of in depth characters with flaws that they cannot over come. Boogie Nights, Trainspotting, Requiem for a Dream are stunning examples of tackling the taboo in shocking and powerful ways. Blood Diamond and Syriana are great examples of extra-american problems and the people that are caught within them. To think that American writing talent or cinematic capability is to tame or overly overt is absurd.

As for television shows you have a wide range of amazing characters, very complex plots and character relationships and serious issues tacked. To name a few, Dexter, Weeds, Breaking Bad, The Riches, The Sopranos, Mad Men, the list goes on. America, if you ask me is far more rooted in the reality of the issues the main poster claimed were “missed” by American audiences.

The REAL problem is the acceptance of the genre not the writers or the audience. The tendency of the industry (which is America’s LARGEST export – entertainment) is to shoot it live action and CGI rather then animated. In Japan the animated feature or series has far more public interest and support. It’s not that we can’t it’s that we have far fewer opportunities. I point to Avatar: The Last Airbender as a significant example of an American animated piece. It contains so many deep themes, significant character development (ALL the characters change and evolve based on their environment and circumstance) and even endangers they in meaningful ways for a show available to younger audiences. It can be done, and spectacularly, however the opportunity is limited.

This main poster doesn’t know what he’s talking about, frankly I think he has some bigotry to deal with. Just look around sir, the American entertainment spectrum is perhaps the most widely varied and engaging in all the world. We’ve simply pushed live action far more heavily then animation and pigeon holed animation towards the Disney variety, largely due to Disney it’s self. Your argument is flawed.

You are right we don’t watch good movies and shows like miracle in saint anna barley anyone saw that because they just want thre charter to live that is not what making animie is about. I lved in America my whole life and everysince my dad bought me DBZ the world’s strongest I have been obbsed now aday I am watching Death Note I did you know that proably 10% of the american kids watch it. I am 12 and I love it.

yo…im japanese, but i canot draw… im proud of it tho.. yup

well technically, only japanese animation can be called “anime” as such, but theres nothing stopping anyone from using the sdame style of drawing, or telling a decent story

western cartoons, for the most part (and im sure some people will disagree with me) just plain suck!!

and in the article, it doesnt say that anyone isnt allowed to make animne or that they just cant
it says that they cant because they wont pay attention to whats going on, wont develop plotlines, characters, always keeping everyone safe and happy
and its boring!!
only someone under the age of 6 would give a shit! and thats only because theyre looking at all the petty colours

most western cartoons dont even have any shadows, its all solid colour, which discards all possibility of depth
also many of them are woefully drawn

read the article please before you start making stupid comments

I think Americans are aloud to draw Anima comic books, video games, extera!
I dont see whats so wrong about it.
Id say a non-japanes person can make Anima^_^

The easiest thing to put up is the definition of anime.

Anime: v. A common name for cartoons made by Japanese artists which usually have a shared common style.

The above is the exact definition of anime and it rules out the possibility that any NON-JAPANESE person can create anime.

hey aznguy go to hell i know alot of japnses falures ok you irrgonet @sshole

personly i agree with iluvmew but great animes are realy good with a lil tragdy a lil happyness and a pinch of fantsey and well debinding on whats the story type a small touch of killing or death p.s im saying this one more time look up newgrounds and look for aldadan it good anime

its not the way of thinking its the heart and the imgantion of the creator to make a good anime p.s and yes that commnet did offend me

hey umm well i think you guys should cheack out newgrounds there is some real talanet there. also im a intraing drictor i want to make ainme and movesand even make vidoe commnets on my own website and yes i am an american and yes i have seen many ainme before[one pice, demon eyes kyo naruto, hellsing organation and robot boy.

I’ll start by saying that I’m not American but I grew up with American cartoons. 4 years ago somehow I’ve bumped into an anime (I didn’t even know that it was a special category of animation) and it was love at first sight…I’m not trying to offend the Americans here but it is like comparing a queen with a begger.I don’t know what the Japanese have that is so special, maybe it’s their way of thinking, that makes them so good. Anyway, by watching anime I kinda fell in love with this way of thinking, and also with the the language, which is not so odd considering that I’ve started learning English from cartoons. I have a huge respect for Japanese people, I love their culture, their lifestyle but Ikakashi, please … I hope at least I can keep my name and my face ’cause I’m planning on becoming the best of the best in this area.So don’t hate me,ok?

hmm, well i hate americans. i dont have anything personal against you, i only hate the ones who think they are the best people of the world etc.
so i think leave the anime to the japanese. but if you really want to make it, move to japan, have your name legally changed to a japanese name, have plastic surgery, learn everything you can about japan, make some manga first or publish someone elses, then you might have a chance at it.
also, americans have their graphic novels, so why cant you stick with them? make an animation? you have things like family guy (quite a lot of gore in that and worse stuff). put them together and you’ll live your dream!

In my opion….American cartoons are greatly influenced by anime and mangas.
is not that they dont know how to draw or make anime but they (atleast for me)
try to make a mix between their style and jap. style. For example i think Afro Samurai is an american/anime cartoon.
Its not really a bad to see either.
Maybe you feel that they are just strait copying from the jap style, but is not completely true. They actually have their diff. if you really pay attention. Is really cool the way most are inspired by the jap style….so is best if not critized….Oh n’ in a huge anime manga fan…im even doing my own series.I just respect everybody’s style…In the end it’s just a cartoon/anime with diff kinds of design, animation & story for anyone….;)

so my dream to become an anime maker is imposible cause im american!? that sucks i already have ideas and drawings and im 11 years old and that is my dream to make anime
