SciFiDaily: Luke Skywalker Takes on Dad, Mom, Jango
Wednesday, December 1st, 2004 at 10:11 pmA blog entry over at SciFiDaily mentions Mark Hamill being pissed about Lucas’ changes to the Star Wars universe via Episode I, II, and III. I have to completely agree with Mark on this, George Lucas really has made Star Wars too serious. Why do you think Jar Jar sucked? Not because he was an annoying little turd, but because the contrast with him to the rest of the movie was much more than C3PO, Chewbacca, or the Ewoks were to the rest of the original trilogy.
I liked it when it wasn’t as serious, and heros could be heros no matter how ridiculous things got; the new trilogy, on the other hand, is so serious that it not only doesn’t fit with the original trilogy, but it doesn’t fit it’s own look. Instead of a gritty, dark, realistic look that would far better serve the new trilogy, it has a vastly updated version of the original look. In other words, its like painting a machine gun pink, or dressing up a teddy bear with army camos, complete with face paint: it just doesn’t work.
Many, many thanks for the plug, Diablod3! As for your take on Episodes I-III, I understand where you’re coming from, but I beg to differ. I do agree that the more recent SW films are far different from the originals. But that’s just it: You can’t compare the two trilogies. They were made during different eras with different players and different technology. I love BOTH trilogies; and personally, I think AOTC is toward the very top of the SW list. Long live Georgie Lucas!
